The main purpose of this ongoing blog will be to track global extreme or record temperatures related to climate change. Any reports I see of ETs will be listed below the main topic of the day. I’ll refer to extreme or record temperatures as ETs (not extraterrestrials).😉
Main Topic: It’s Bitterly Cold in the U.S. During the World’s Warmest January in History
Dear Diary. I’ve seen this rodeo a lot in which the United States and Canada are much colder than average while the rest of the planet is very toasty. This weather pattern, of course, ferrets out ignorant climate naysayers, prompting responses by people like Dr. Mann:
That cold sliver of North America covers less than 1% of the planet (https://t.co/JxNnbB8L9j).
— Prof Michael E. Mann (@MichaelEMann) January 16, 2024
The PLANET is the hottest we've ever measured in mid-January (https://t.co/ZyRSUDcTFA).
Such malicious ignorance does not serve the people of your district, congresswoman. https://t.co/9lfcc5X5Pq pic.twitter.com/RpkVdrlr5v
During the middle of the day temperatures are bitterly cold for most of the nation:
The South is experiencing below zero wind chills in some areas…

How’s everyone holding up? 🥶 pic.twitter.com/JOEKSvQwtM
I’d like to see researchers give as answers as to why the U.S. keeps lagging behind the rest of the planet in association with warming trends. I suspect it has a lot to do with geography of North America and surrounding oceans influencing the polar vortex, but that’s just an educated guess.
As far as record ratios go, the world was warmer than the United States in 2023 looking at my stats:
The global record for DHMX vs. DLMN records was 4.29-1 for the globe in contrast to 2.34-1 for the United States, for example, in 2023. In fact, this trend in record stats can be seen for all off the years of this decade so far. You can view these statistics and read my writeup on that here:
In a real twist of fate because the United States has the most influence over international climate policy than any one country, people here are not as concerned as they might be if record warmth without as many cold spells was as prevalent as it has been across the rest of the planet…and Dr. Mann would not be fending off awful Congress people like Lauren Boebert…just saying.
Here are more “ET’s” recorded from around the planet the last couple of days, their consequences, and some extreme temperature outlooks, as well as any extreme precipitation reports:

With #global temperatures at an all-time high, it is no surprise that extreme #weather has been identified as the top global risk for 2024. 2023 was horrendous for climate disasters. To think that 2024 will probably be even worse. #climate pic.twitter.com/0S1LP5U03P

By request, here is an alternative coloring of the Earth Albedo graph showing the rapid decline of our planet's reflectivity.
— Prof. Eliot Jacobson (@EliotJacobson) January 16, 2024
As the planet gets less reflective, more incoming solar radiation is absorbed and radiated back as longwave heat, which is then trapped by rising GHGs. pic.twitter.com/gB87q7EbrD

Leon does a great job here showing that the percent of heat retained by the Earth is increasing. (Earth absorbs sunlight and reradiates heat back to space. But this graph shows the portion that is reradiated is decreasing because the Earth system is hoarding more of it. https://t.co/7V2ILZr43G
