The main purpose of this ongoing blog will be to track United States extreme or record temperatures related to climate change. Any reports I see of ETs will be listed below the main topic of the day. I’ll refer to extreme or record temperatures as ETs (not extraterrestrials).😉
Main Topic: Astonishing South American Heat Wave Gets A Name…Forneus
Dear Diary. We are rapidly closing in on Halloween, so it’s time to have a little more fun with demonology relating to heat waves. On a more serious note, these heat events are getting a name for better identification and to help the public remember such events. Truth be told, since I’ve begun naming these events, I should have assigned a hellish name to a very persistent September and October South American heat wave long before now because it is historic in nature. This will be the first overseas named heat wave, and since we are up to the “F” letter in the alphabet for 2020, let’s assign it the name “Forneus.”
From Wikipedia:
In demonology, Forneus is a Great Marquis of Hell, and has twenty-nine legions of demons under his rule. He teaches Rhetoric and languages, gives men a good name, and makes them be loved by their friends and foes.
He is depicted as a great sea monster. He causes men to have a good name and to have the knowledge and understanding of tongues. He makes one beloved by his foes as well as of his friends. He is partly of the Order of Thrones, and partly of that of Angels. His name seems to come from “fornus” (oven). He can take many different forms but mainly prefers his human form.
Well certainly, conditions have begun to resemble an oven in southern Brazil as we move through their spring. Here is a lot more from Scott Duncan:
Just looking at a snapshot from today of the continent, we continue to see above average 500 millibar heights and 850 temperatures in association with a persistent heat dome.
Given the historic nature and longevity of Forneus, I would rank this heatwave a 5 on a scale 1-5. Forneus can be described as “catastrophic” for the Amazon and those living in vicinity of fires there.
So, the “lungs of the Earth,” unfortunately, are burning from Forneus. Keep looking at my blog daily to see whether or not conditions across South America get better as we move into the Southern Hemisphere summer.

(As usual, this will be a fluid post in which more information gets added during the day as it crosses my radar, crediting all who have put it on-line. Items will be archived on this site for posterity. In most instances click on the pictures of each tweet to see each article. The most noteworthy items will be listed first.)
