The main purpose of this ongoing blog will be to track planetary extreme, or record temperatures related to climate change. Any reports I see of ETs will be listed below the main topic of the day. I’ll refer to extreme or record temperatures as ETs (not extraterrestrials).😉
Main Topic: “Odd” Damaging Hot Pattern Develops Over Canada
Dear Diary. So far this war, season a topsy tervy weather pattern has developed over North America, which has had some climate change signatures. During May most of Canada has been at least as warm as the lower 48 states. Earlier this month we had a remarkable heatwave over western Canada that I dubbed Heatwave Amoco. That heatwave has led to massive fires across Alberta, which are still raging:
Yesterday in my news section I posted several notes and links concerning devastating wildfires in Nova Scotia. Here are a few of these:
Here are some record reports from Canada from the weekend:
The weather pattern will only get odder, this time with central Canada undergoing much more extreme heat later this week looking at these meteorological charts:
Note the huge orange and red anomaly centered on Hudson Bay while cool blue systems are over the United States. This is not your father’s jet stream. It’s one of the oddest jet configurations I have ever seen for late May/early June across North America. Usually, a strong jet resides near the Canadian border and not up near Canada’s Northwest Territories. Such a weakened jet with plenty of upper-level closed lows milling around a continent is a signature of climate change based on the work by Dr. Jennifer Francis and Dr. Michael Mann.
At lower levels plenty of warmth is forecast:
I will continue to be reporting on record warmth occurring across Canada this week.
Here are some other “ET’s” recorded from around the planet the last couple of days, their consequences, and some extreme temperature outlooks, as well as any extreme precipitation reports:
Here is more climate and weather news from Tuesday:
(As usual, this will be a fluid post in which more information gets added during the day as it crosses my radar, crediting all who have put it on-line. Items will be archived on this site for posterity. In most instances click on the pictures of each tweet to see each article. The most noteworthy items will be listed first.)
