Gretta Thunberg…New Poster Child for the Opposition?
Throughout history usually one person comes to encapsulate a big movement in history either for good or evil, rising above all other’s with similar views. They become, if you will, a cult of personality. When we think of the word “fascism,” our minds immediately picture Adolf Hitler, or “civil rights,” Dr. Martin Luther King, giving two examples. After her moving speech before the United Nations the climate movement may historically have their main figure going into the 2020s, Greta Thunberg.
I know this by how those in the diminishing opposition camp are trying to demonize the now world famous spokesperson for the climate movement, who rocketed to fame after just one year of striking. Their hair appears to be figuratively on fire (pun intended) at the mention of Greta Thunberg’s name, Dear Diary, as of 9/24/19. Greta has put the climate issue at the top of media programs, which was relegated to proverbial back pages jus a few months ago. Everyone on this morning’s talk shows across the U.S. mentioned Greta by name.
I had to laugh (or cry) when I heard what one Fox News T.V. personality was saying to the public last night:
Anytime someone starts comparing a movement to a cult they are appealing to emotions by using bad connotation labelling. Laura Ingraham has millions of conservative followers who fear that the climate movement will take us down a socialist road, economically, and take away our freedoms. Nothing could be further away from the truth, except taking away individual freedom to pollute as one of the biggest goals of the climate movement. I’m all for that. What Greta is trying to do along with other youth is to try to create a clean world in which people have the opportunity to be free to be anything they like while using either mass transit or non-polluting electric vehicles.
Imagery coming from the far right concerning Greta Thunberg is even more disgusting but brings home my main point that she has become the central figure of the climate movement. Did I mention fascism? Here is one just down right vile example:
Dr. Martin Luther King was certainly vilified during his day. Truth will always overcome slings and arrows of deceit promoting false beliefs and old, bad practices. I sincerely hope that sooner, not later, scientific truth will become a beacon of light to a dark world of carbon pollution so that we can get on with the hard work of realizing Greta’s dream.
