Extreme Temperature Diary- Monday October 25th, 2021/Main Topic: A Warming, Undulating Jet Stream Brings Wild Stormy Weather To The United States

The main purpose of this ongoing blog will be to track planetary extreme or record temperatures related to climate change. Any reports I see of ETs will be listed below the main topic of the day. I’ll refer to extreme or record temperatures as ETs (not extraterrestrials).😉

Main Topic: A Warming, Undulating Jet Stream Brings Wild Stormy Weather To The United States

Dear Diary. The calendar says October, but the weather makes it seem like May this week. The culprit? A very amplified jet stream highly influenced by climate change. Already a relatively small system produced some severe weather in the Midwest:

At the 500 millibar level here is what we saw at 00Z Monday:

The Midwest storms occurred from the small cold pocket centered over Iowa on the above chart. The big kahuna was the large cold pocket located off the West Coast. This thing was forecast to be massive a few days ago:

Indeed last night we did see record rainfall, heavy snow, and high winds in association with this “cyclone bomb:”

This storm is a blessing for drought plagued California, though:

The western storm will move through the Rockies then eastward across the rest of the United States during the middle of this week. Here is what I fear:

I have a feeling that the prior two SPC charts won’t be doing the coming severe weather outbreak justice looking at forecast heat and instability parameters.

So why do we have May in October? It’s probably because of a lot of anomalous heat at northern latitudes affecting the jet stream:

We will see what transpires this week. I’ll be posting many notes on this blog.

Here are some “ET’s” reported from Monday:

Here is more climate and weather news from Monday:

(As usual, this will be a fluid post in which more information gets added during the day as it crosses my radar, crediting all who have put it on-line. Items will be archived on this site for posterity. In most instances click on the pictures of each tweet to see each article. The most noteworthy items will be listed first.)

Now here are some of today’s articles and notes on the horrid COVID-19 pandemic:
