The main purpose of this ongoing blog will be to track planetary extreme, or record temperatures related to climate change. Any reports I see of ETs will be listed below the main topic of the day. I’ll refer to extreme or record temperatures as ETs (not extraterrestrials).😉
Main Topic: A Hellish Omega Pattern for Europe
Dear Diary. Now our attention turns toward Europe, which is experiencing another dire climate crisis related weather pattern in the form of the Greek letter Omega jet stream configuration. Meteorologically this is a blocky pattern, which traditionally is not too rare, but on steroids when climate change gets factored into the mix. It forms when two cold pockets from higher latitudes get pinched off and move to lower latitudes between a predominant larger warm pocket producing the Omega configuration. We are seeing more of these according to Dr. Michael Mann and Dr. Jennifer Francis because the jet stream is getting weaker and wavier. In Europe’s case this week, here is what we see:

So what does this jet configuration entail? Why this:
Spatial compound extremes unfolding
— Erich Fischer (@erichfischer) September 4, 2023
A textbook example of spatially compounding extremes associated with an Omega blocking: flooding in Spain, late summer heatwave in Central Europe and flooding in Greece, with the most extreme conditions yet to come. https://t.co/sqTh0zDe5Q
How it can be flooding in Spain and Greece while large parts of Europe are under record-breaking September heat…

Let’s start with flooding both in and around Spain and what will shortly be occurring across Greece:

2-3 feet of rain in 3 days! “Unbelievable amounts of rain in Greece, as I have never seen them. Over 700, some models do more than 1000 mm in 3 days. No area can cope with this mass of rain without catastrophic events. The warm Mediterranean provides the fuel.” https://t.co/6dFN9vevTk

This is so far beyond a question of records-broken: This is survival.#climatecatastrophe https://t.co/EaHLGA3CYM
I remember the days before Harvey hit Houston and looking at the rain forecasts and thinking, "that can't possibly be right, the model is broken." In reality, the model was *underpredicting* rainfall. https://t.co/c3EdDSwHHZ
— Andrew Dessler (@AndrewDessler) September 4, 2023
780mm is roughly the average rainfall that many parts of the UK get in a whole year.
— Ed Hawkins (@ed_hawkins) September 5, 2023
Imagine that amount falling in less than a day.
These rainfall events are getting more intense because of burning fossil fuels. https://t.co/WzvZfBKxAI
