The main purpose of this ongoing blog will be to track global extreme or record temperatures related to climate change. Any reports I see of ETs will be listed below the main topic of the day. I’ll refer to extreme or record temperatures as ETs (not extraterrestrials).😉
Main Topic: Another Historic Heatwave for Argentina
Dear Diary. Ha Ha! The jokes on me. A few days ago meteorological guidance indicated that Australia had a good chance for setting an all-time national hot record, which I bought. Apparently forecast temperatures for one station got close, but no national record was set:
UPDATE:EXCEPTIONAL HEAT IN AUSTRALIA
— Extreme Temperatures Around The World (@extremetemps) January 25, 2024
49.4C Birdsville hottest January day in Queensland, 0.1C from Queensland all time high ,after the record of all time highest minimum
The day which was supposed to be the hottest,it was the coolest.
Models & humans were all fooled by nature. https://t.co/vQC4np0oaI
Another day of brutal heat in AUSTRALIA. Max by States:
— Extreme Temperatures Around The World (@extremetemps) January 25, 2024
48.6C Birdsville, Queensland
47.8C Marree, South Australia
46.8C Smithville, New South Wales pic.twitter.com/O7WR00faJZ
The highest temperature ever recorded in Australia is 50.7 °C (123.3 °F), which was recorded on 2 January 1960 at Oodnadatta, South Australia, and 13 January 2022 at Onslow, Western Australia set just a couple of years ago.
What is a certainty is that more large Southern Hemisphere countries are seeing all-time records (but no national records yet) during a torrid summer for the southern half of the world:
Yesterday 38.8C at Talca CHILE,new all time record (previous 38.1C in 2017)
— Extreme Temperatures Around The World (@extremetemps) January 23, 2024
Today very hot in ARGENTINA with 41.7C (provisional) at Trelew
Tomorrow very hot again in Chile with possible 40C in central areas
On Thursday and Friday, even worse:42/43C in Viedma and Choel,Argentina https://t.co/k6dLdEWGAa
Another all time record in ARGENTINA
— Extreme Temperatures Around The World (@extremetemps) January 24, 2024
Historic 42.6C at Trelew hottest day on record.
More records are coming, the worst has yet to come. https://t.co/mla9MgXINV
40C in CHILE🇨🇱
— Extreme Temperatures Around The World (@extremetemps) January 25, 2024
Both Huelchun in the Metropolitan region and Llay Llay INIA in the Valparaiso broke the 40C mark.
Widespread 35C+ from Atacama to Araucania Regions.
It's a serious heat wave.
From tomorrow the heat will re-turn exceptional in Argentina Patagonia:43C on sight. pic.twitter.com/NaKDOQIPyB
We can easily see why Argentina and Chile are seeing another historic heatwave looking at mid-levels of the atmosphere. The heat dome over the area will max out on Friday:
Looking at the above Pivotal Weather image, a strong heat dome above 591 decameters will build in between a cold trough residing over the extreme southern portion of South America and an upper-level low over southern Brazil.
At 850 millibars it will be quite toasty:
I’ll let you know of more historic records from this heatwave and any consequences from it during the next few days.
Here are more “ET’s” recorded from around the planet the last couple of days, their consequences, and some extreme temperature outlooks, as well as any extreme precipitation reports:

European gas demand is down about 35% from its peak. Why? In part, gas price spikes destroyed gas demand. Gas cannibalized gas. Also, EE, Electrification and RE displace gas. Europe slashes gas demand, as gas does security, economic and climate damage to EU.
