The main purpose of this ongoing blog will be to track global extreme or record temperatures related to climate change. Any reports I see of ETs will be listed below the main topic of the day. I’ll refer to extreme or record temperatures as ETs (not extraterrestrials).😉
Main Topic: Warmest January Readings in Recorded History Just Occurred for Europe
Dear Diary. Yesterday the warmest reading in recorded history during January occurred in Europe in Spain:
JUST IN: Europe has just preliminarily set a new all-time January record high temperature with 30.7°C (87.3°F) in Gavarda, Spain. Incredible warmth for this time of year. pic.twitter.com/XWN4GjN4Bm
— Nahel Belgherze (@WxNB_) January 25, 2024
It was no wonder given the strength of the heat dome over the area:
Wowza! It's no wonder looking at the heat dome that has built over Spain. These 500 millibar heights would be excessively high for July let alone January. @MichaelEMann @KHayhoe @ProfStrachan @ClimateHuman @BMcNoldy @BrianMcHugh2011 https://t.co/AOZBaqekQe pic.twitter.com/K8jfIvAj9j
— Guy Walton (@climateguyw) January 25, 2024
I’m still not getting over the extent of this heat dome. I think I am staring at a chart from summer.
As far as the forecast goes, European heat will be with us well into next week with the ridge and warmth nosing north and eastward throughout the continent:
While not much of a health threat, this warm spell portends an ominous spring going into summer. A similar or worse heat dome over Europe would be a killer, not to mention producing a big drought affecting crops, available food, and fiver transportation, similar to what happened during 2022.
The heat across #Europe for the 25th of #January was insane. The warmest January day in Europe since records began! The summer of 2024 is expected to bring more dangerous #heatwaves and #wildfires across the region. pic.twitter.com/G2ftbUoL7d
— Peter Dynes (@PGDynes) January 25, 2024
All of this is brought on by carbon pollution accumulated in the atmosphere from about 200 years of burning fossil fuels…which will continue to be burned because of greedy oil and coal company interests.
Here are more new extreme temperatures or records reported from Europe:
Among the dozens records fallen in SPAIN yesterday, here a list of the main stations which include records broken by huge margins like in the mountain Port Navacerrada 18.3C (+16.5C above normal) .

One place that I'm actually more concerned about at the moment? Vancouver Island & SW BC, which may see a genuinely intense onslaught of wet & warm "Pineapple Express" atmospheric rivers.
