Dear Diary. Welcome to July. Finally! It would appear that the heatwave that we have been following since late April named Heatwave Exxon will slowly diminish over the Southeast and collapse next week. Meanwhile, a new heat dome will pop up in the West and grow to major proportions. Using my list, this will be called Heatwave Gazprom.
Here is the current 500 millibar state of Heatwave Exxon:
Currently Heatwave Exxon is huge, covering the south-central parts of the country and extending into the Southeast and Southwest.
Here are the current National Weather Service heat advisories in association with Heatwave Exxon:
Not only does the south-central U.S. have problems but California is really baking.
Fast forward to next Sunday this is the forecast for the 500 millibar pattern:
The heat dome in association with Heatwave Exxon has greatly diminished with its remnants over the Southeast Atlantic area. A cool Midwestern system digging down from the Midwest should put an end to Heatwave Exxon. Meanwhile Heatwave Gasprom will be in full swing over the West.
It will still be hot across the South through the July 4th holiday, though. The 10K Peachtree Road Race could be one of the hottest on record unfortunately for runners:
We’ll see how all of this progresses with time on this site.
