The main purpose of this ongoing blog will be to track planetary extreme, or record temperatures related to climate change. Any reports I see of ETs will be listed below the main topic of the day. I’ll refer to extreme or record temperatures as ETs (not extraterrestrials).😜
Main Topic: Gavin Newsom Brings Defiant Note to COP30 Talks
Dear Diary. If you have been reading my posts for years, you know that this Climate Guy loves to make predictions, after all I am a weather predicting meteorologist also. Baring nothing tragic, my tea leaves indicate that Governor Gavin Newsome will be the next democratic nominee for the presidency in 2028, and he will probably beat out any republican contenders knowing how pissed the American public are against Trump and MAGA as of late 2025. That’s of course if we still have free and fair elections unless fascistic authoritarianism has completely taken over the United States.
Gavin Newsome is the only major U.S. official attending COP30 in Brazil this week and has made quite the positive splash there, acting very presidential. Over the past several years as governor of California he has made great strides to mitigate climate change. I wholly endorse him because he would be our greatest climate champion president so far…even better than President Biden with his Inflation Reduction Act.

Leave it to California’s governor to bring a little Hollywood energy to the Amazon. Gavin Newsom arrived in Belém as a pointed rebuke to US President Donald Trump’s decision not to send an official US delegation.
Today’s newsletter lays out what Newsom told delegates. Plus, a scoop: China has declined to chip in to Brazil’s forest fund, dealing a blow to what was supposed to be one of COP30’s flagship initiatives. But don’t be fooled by this squabble, the two countries aredeeply entwined on climate — and on oil drilling.
Protests were always expected to be a feature of this COP, with the previous three happening in authoritarian countries where demonstrations are restricted. Last night, a group of protesters demanding greater Indigenous representation clashed with security guards. Watch the video here.
‘Trump is temporary’
California Governor Gavin Newsom swept into the COP30 climate summit in Brazil yesterday with all the fanfare of a head of state.
He met with foreign ministers, huddled with the governor of the state of Pará, Brazil, and signed a declaration for deepened collaboration with Germany’s Baden-Württemberg.
And everywhere Newsom went inside the packed conference venue near the mouth of the Amazon River, he was mobbed by delegates and activists eager for a glimpse of the Democratic governor who’s effectively become the highest-ranking US emissary at the international climate talks.

“The United States of America is as dumb as we want to be on this topic, but the state of California is not,” Newsom told delegates. “And so we are going to assert ourselves, and we are going to lean in, and we are going to compete in this space.”
Newsom and other state and local officials came to the climate summit with a message of continued US commitment to battling climate change, even as Trump retreats from the fight. Trump, who has derided climate change as a “hoax,” is shunning the United Nations talks and so far hasn’t dispatched even low-level US government officials to the negotiations.
Trump is instead “directly engaging” with world leaders on energy issues, a White House official said.

That includes using trade talks and tariff to encourage other countries to jettison their renewable power commitments and buy more American fuels. And last month, US officials joined Saudi Arabia, Iran and other nations in a successful campaign to derail plans for the first-ever fixed global carbon tax on shipping.
Yesterday, Newsom, who is considering a 2028 presidential bid, cast himself as an antidote to Trump. Newsom emphasized that his state of California and its $4 trillion economy — the fourth-largest in the world —are leading the fight against climate change and embracing emissions-free electricity.
“California distinguishes itself from the current occupant of the White House in Washington, DC,” Newsom said during an event hosted by Germany. “California is a stable and reliable partner.”
Newsom also used his time at the Brazil conference to position himself as an international leader and to remind delegates Trump “is not a permanent fixture” in the White House.
“Trump is temporary, and I hope folks around the globe remember that,” Newsom told reporters. “He will be remembered in years, not in decades. And he’s reckless, he’s chaotic, mercurial and he’s transactional, but people have to stand up. You stand up to a bully.”
In recent weeks, Newsom has moderated his approach on a host of issues, including energy, in what political analysts see as the governor preparing himself for a presidential run. After leading a long crusade against fossil fuels, he’s worked closely this year with the oil industry on changes that may ease regulatory restrictions and boost profits.
