Extreme Temperature Diary-Thursday January 9th, 2020/ Main Topic: Spring-like Storm Will Pummel The U.S. in Winter This Weekend

Thursday January 9th… Dear Diary. The main purpose of this ongoing blog will be to track United States extreme or record temperatures related to climate change. Any reports I see of ETs will be listed below the main topic of the day. I’ll refer to extreme or record temperatures as ETs (not extraterrestrials).😉

Main Topic: Spring-like Storm Will Pummel The U.S. This Weekend

Dear Diary. It’s been a while since I’ve written a weather post involving the United States. Ever better short term meteorological models have been giving residents across the southern and eastern states a good heads up that trouble is brewing in association with a spring-like storm since Sunday and Monday for this coming weekend.

As I’ve stated many times global warming puts more thermal energy in the Earth’s atmosphere, which can lead to warmer storm systems in winter. The one coming up for this weekend is a textbook case. Ahead of this winter/spring storm system, which The Weather Channel has dubbed Isaiah, a record warm air mass will develop from the Southeast into the Northeast. The first three weeks of January are climatologically the coldest across the United States. Sometimes we see wintry precipitation in association with near record cold temperatures as far south as the Gulf Coast this time of the year, or so has been the case in my experience during my lifetime. Instead we will see an April like atmospheric regime.

Some cold air will interact with this April airmass to produce tornadic trouble.

The following are some tweets with graphics from Bill Karins, a trusted NBC meteorologist, depicting what’s in store:

And from Jeff Berardelli, the main CBS meteorologist:

My friend Bob Henson was blogging on this synoptic situation a couple of days ago. Here is his report:

The warmer the globe gets the more often we will see spring in winter and summer in spring…just sayin’. I’ll be posting more notes on what actually transpires this weekend including a myriad of warm “ET” reports. Stay tuned to trusted weather reporting sources and stay safe.

Here is more climate and weather news from Wednesday:

(As usual, this will be a fluid post in which more information gets added during the day as it crosses my radar, crediting all who have put it on-line. Items will be archived on this site for posterity. In most instances click on the pictures of each tweet to see each article.)
