The main purpose of this ongoing blog will be to track planetary extreme, or record temperatures related to climate change. Any reports I see of ETs will be listed below the main topic of the day. I’ll refer to extreme or record temperatures as ETs (not extraterrestrials).😉
Main Topic: Winter’s Last Major Horah for the Eastern States
Dar Diary. Weather models have been very consistent, forecasting a cold outbreak for this weekend from the Midwest into the Deep South. Across the South minimums will be about as cold as they have been all winter long for coldest readings. For example, in my hometown of Atlanta the thermometer hasn’t gotten below 26°F all winter long. We should see mid-20s for lows Sunday morning, so it could be colder in mid-March here than during all of boreal winter (December through February).
This cold outbreak won’t be major or “historic” in nature, so I won’t give it a name, nor will it last well beyond this weekend. Some record mins from stations that haven’t been keeping records too long are likely, though. Here is what we see on the GFS by Saturday morning:
As precipitation ends, snow could be in the air as far south as Birmingham and Atlanta. Looking at climatology from the past few decades, this occurrence would not be too unusual at all.
As stated, 20’s for mins are likely across the South on Sunday. Some stations should see daily record lows, particularly across the South. It’s amazing to know that we saw 80°F in Atlanta and around the South just a few days ago. Yes, this is whiplash weather brought about by climate change:
Such whiplash weather can play havoc with flora that has begun to bud much earlier than average. Thankfully this go-round fruit blossoms have not budded yet despite earlier warm weather. Also, looking at met models, it would appear that this will be the last major cold wave of the year for the eastern half of the nation.
I’ll have more notes on this cold outbreak as we move towards this weekend.

(As usual, this will be a fluid post in which more information gets added during the day as it crosses my radar, crediting all who have put it on-line. Items will be archived on this site for posterity. In most instances click on the pictures of each tweet to see each article. The most noteworthy items will be listed first.)
