Tuesday March 27th… Dear Diary. The main purpose of this ongoing post will be to track United States extreme or record temperatures related to climate change. Any reports I see of ETs will be listed below the main topic of the day. I’ll refer to extreme or record temperatures as ETs (not extraterrestrials)😊. Here is today’s main climate change related topic:
Segueing from yesterday’s post it’s one thing to push back on climate change communication via a false narrative in blogs or over the air, which is allowed under the 1st amendment of our constitution, but wholly unlawful to threaten or defame or slander anyone because of their views. Nevertheless, some people feel so threatened by the inconvenient truth of climate change that they want to shoot the messengers, or at the very least harass them. The problem has been so bad that organizations like Climate Science Legal Defense Fund have formed to help scientists stave off lawsuits and go after those actually trying to harm the reputations of scientists. Their stated mission is to defend the scientific endeavor by exposing and challenging attacks against science. Check out some of CSLDF’s legal defense programs on their twitter page. Also, please click on the link below to access a video of some prominent climate scientists giving some brief testimonials saying that they have been harassed and threatened:
Bill McKibbenVerified account @billmckibben
“Mann could be said to be the Jerry Sandusky of climate science, except that instead of molesting children, he has molested and tortured data in the service of politicized science.”
Mark Steyn at the National Review passed on those comments in a blog post and added that Dr. Mann is “behind the fraudulent climate-change ‘hockey-stick’ graph…”
Dr. Mann subsequently sued both institutions and court filings have been flying back and forth ever since. Dr. Mann’s lawyers have just filed a response to scientific and legal claims from the National Review and CEI. As their new brief makes clear, any claim that Dr. Mann’s research is “fraudulent” is pure bunk.
In his book chronicling the attacks he’s faced, Dr. Mann compares climate contrarians’ strategy to the one used by predator animals he saw in Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. Rather than trying to take on all the world’s climate scientists, they pick out someone from the herd who they think they can attack effectively. He’s faced many over-the-top criticisms of his research—and his character—from the Wall Street Journal editorial board, Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas) and a whole host of front groups, political actors and online haters.
There are literally dozens of articles relating Dr. Mann’s travails through the legal system. Here is me such link: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/jan/09/denialist-harassment-of-climate-scientists-needs-to-stop.
From this article: When Michael Mann chose a career in science, he didn’t think that he would be denounced on billboards, grilled by hostile legislators on Capitol Hill and in the British House of Commons, have his emails hacked and stolen, receive letters laced with an anthrax-like white powder, and become the target of anonymous death threats.
This is where I get on my soapbox. Throughout human history there have been individuals and groups terrified of truths leading to change, such as some members of the Catholic Church not wanting to come to terms with the fact that Earth wasn’t the center of the universe during the Renaissance. These groups take their wrath out on the messengers of the discovered truth, such as Galileo. Perhaps Drs. Michael Mann, Katherine Heyhoe, and Naomi Orsekes are the 21st century versions of Galileo, only this time the stakes are very high that their truth get accepted much faster than during the Renaissance. Those who resort to underhanded tactics to hurt people because their old views can’t stand the real crucible of science are not only charlatans, but cowards that need to be punished by every extent of the law.
Think about the school bully. Deep down behind bravado and bluster usually is a scared soul. When it comes to climate science; and thus climate change, old views of the world are threatened such as the biggy thinking that burning coal and using oil won’t harm the environment. The basic economies of most nations are built upon the foundation of cheap energy. It’s no wonder that brown energy bullies looking a big dollar signs are coming out of the proverbial woodwork doing everything humanly possible to stop rational change. Sigh.
Most climate scientists I have encountered seem a little paranoid. At this point in time, dear diary, no wonder.
