Extreme Temperature Diary-June 25, 2019/ Third Major Heat Episode Coming For U.S. Plus An Update On The European Heat Wave

Tuesday June 25th… Dear Diary. The main purpose of this ongoing blog will be to track United States extreme or record temperatures related to climate change. Any reports I see of ETs will be listed below the main topic of the day. I’ll refer to extreme or record temperatures as ETs (not extraterrestrials).😉

Third Major Heat Episode Coming For U.S. Plus An Update On The European Heat Wave

I’m so pleased that forecasters are now quickly attributing major heat episodes occurring around the planet Dear Diary as of June 2019, to carbon pollution, and that the nuts and bolts of how these episodes develop are being studied scientifically:

I’ve often in the past few years shown still panels of 500 millibar patterns to alert my readers of heat waves. Doing so meteorologically is not showing the whole picture of why heat waves develop in the atmosphere. We also need to look at something called Rossby waves. Here are tweets from experts that show how Rossby waves are aiding to form the heat dome that will be responsible for this week’s historic heat wave over Europe:

At lower 850 millibars we note this:

And, of course, at the surface where we all feel heat the French will be experiencing this level of warmth:

Already the European heat wave is flexing its muscles:

Using the Pivotal charts I typically show we see that a 597+ decameter ridge is already in the process of building over Europe and will be apparent on Wednesday:

I’ll be adding many more notes on this heat wave the next couple of days such as this pointing to a great solution:

In this country a third heat episode will be building by this weekend over the wet upper Midwest where heat indices will be gross and extremely dangerous for all doing outdoor activities:

I’m not as impressed with the heat dome building over the Upper Midwest as that of Europe, but the thing will get close to, if not exceed 594 decameters by Saturday:

By tomorrow we see pockets of 90+ heat building across the United States, which will be hot, but not up to record levels:

I’ll, of course, add future notes about this coming third major heat episode for the United States this season on this blog.

Here is more climate and weather news from Tuesday:

(As usual, this will be a fluid post in which more information gets added during the day as it crosses my radar, crediting all who have put it on-line. Items will be archived on this site for posterity. In most instances click on the pictures of each tweet to see each article.)
