The main purpose of this ongoing blog will be to track global extreme or record temperatures related to climate change. Any reports I see of ETs will be listed below the main topic of the day. I’ll refer to extreme or record temperatures as ETs (not extraterrestrials).😜
Main Topic: Updated Ed Hawkins Visuals
Dear Diary. Way back when I started this website the fourth blog that I posted in 2017 was about how visuals were the best way to convey the message that our climate was out of whack:
I was informed in a note that Ed Hawkins has updated his climate trend visuals to include 2025 data. He came up with his now famed climate stripes visuals indicating how warm the climate was getting in 2016. This from Wikipedia:
On 9 May 2016, Hawkins published his climate spiraldata visualization graphic, which was widely reported as having gone viral. The climate spiral was widely praised, Jason Samenow writing in The Washington Post that the spiral graph was “the most compelling global warming visualization ever made”.
Click the above link to see all of Ed’s visuals. Here are some highlights:

Here are some “ETs” recorded from around the U.S. the last couple of days, their consequences, and some extreme temperature outlooks, as well as any extreme precipitation reports:

(As usual, this will be a fluid post in which more information gets added during the day as it crosses my radar, crediting all who have put it on-line. Items will be archived on this site for posterity. In most instances click on the pictures of each tweet to see each article. The most noteworthy items will be listed first.)
Are temperatures far from "normal" becoming more common in the Arctic? It's an simple question but it quickly turns complicated. The latest post from the Alaska and Arctic Climate newsletter takes a look this thorny question. #Arctic #Climatealaskaclimate.substack.com/p/arctic-reg…
Climate was predictable for millennia. We built everything on that. Now we're nearing irreversible warming thresholds—once crossed, they reinforce themselves. Business-as-usual gambles on this. When consequences can't be undone, early action isn't cautious. It's rational.… pic.twitter.com/dDlwAMSVei
really good discussion on the anti science repeal of the endangerment finding & how this may lead to higher energy prices & more air pollution for us all

We need more stories that help people learn from what’s working. Not just what’s going wrong. Not just what “has to happen by 2050.”Real examples of action that others can see, understand & build on.Here's a 🧵on advice & tips for sharing #climate stories that actually inspire action.
We say #snowmageddon as a joke, but if ever there was a time to use it, it’s now!! Watch as the West Coast gets bombarded by at least 5 storms in 15 days, with up to 15 feet of snow in the high Sierra, and that may be an underestimate if the models verify. NWS says up to 8 feet by Wednesday!
Weather Whiplash returns to the South and East. By mid to late week record heat will spread eastward, making for a toasty late week / weekend. Then a strong cold surge early next week reminds us it’s still winter 😜 from 30° above normal to 15° below for some. Enjoy the ride!

Significant air pollution episode over Michigan the past 2 days as 50° temps melt a 7-week-old snow pack, mobilizing PM 2.5 particles that had fallen on the snow. Light winds, low mixing, and fresh emissions contributing to the event. AQI largely in the orange "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups" range.
Wow, thanks, I assumed that the map I got from the EPA was current, but it was indeed from Friday. The Monday purpleair.com map shows the air pollution episode caused by the mobilization of PM2.5 particles from the melting snowpack. Concerning that airnow.gov is not updating the pollution maps.
