The main purpose of this ongoing blog will be to track planetary extreme, or record temperatures related to climate change. Any reports I see of ETs will be listed below the main topic of the day. I’ll refer to extreme or record temperatures as ETs (not extraterrestrials).😜
Here is a new feature for this blog, which I will add daily. This is the latest inciteful Green News Report from my friends Desi Doyen and Brad Friedman at Progressive Voices. Hit ‘continue reading,’ listen, then hit return to see my daily topics:
Main Topic: Strong Possibility of a Major U.S. Heatwave by This Weekend
Dear Diary. The United States has been fortunate not to have a major heatwave in late May and/or June. A whopper of a heat dome did produce the earliest major heatwave on record in March, which I dubbed Artex for the Artex Oil Company of Ohio. The next one on the list would be Bluestone for Bluestone Natural Resources of Oklahoma, that drills for gas and oil. A major CAT3 heatwave has developed in Europe dubbed Amber, a dragon name. Amber will become a historic CAT4 because it will set many all-time records. Fortunately, I doubt that Bluestone will set many all-time records, but it will cause health issues.
If I had to peg the day that Bluestone would become a CAT3 and thus named, it would be on Sunday looking at weather forecasts:
That would be the day that a cold system for late June would develop in the Pacific Northwest, which would start to pump up a heat dome over the Southeast. That heat dome could build as high as about 597 decameters on Wednesday of next week as the system builds northward into the southern Midwest and Northeast:
Bluestone’s heat dome will probably retrograde westward, which will allow for relief across most of the eastern half of the U.S. except for the western High Plains, Northern Plains and south Texas and Florida:
I’ll have more updates on this heatwave late this week.
Here are some “ETs” recorded from around the U.S. the last couple of days, their consequences, and some extreme temperature outlooks, as well as any extreme precipitation reports:
Bordeaux’s high Monday of 41.8C (107F) falls on the extreme right tail, 3.6 Sigma with a return interval of 1-in-7000 years for June in a historical climate. But heat like this is much more likely now due to #climatechange. #heatwave #france
(As usual, this will be a fluid post in which more information gets added during the day as it crosses my radar, crediting all who have put it on-line. Items will be archived on this site for posterity. In most instances click on the pictures of each tweet to see each article. The most noteworthy items will be listed first.)
Not only are these 100°F+ temps brutal for June in Europe: the heat wave's even more dangerous because of its prolonged nature and the relatively moist air (dew points above 70F in some cases) leading to "tropical nights." @climateconnections.bsky.social yaleclimateconnections.org/2026/06/unpr…
Europe is melting! The size, intensity, and longevity of this #heatwave is enormous. Peak temperatures will reach 45°C / 100-115°F this week in #France. You are looking at temperature anomalies in the cloud layer over the next 2 weeks, which peak at +20°C… 1/
The 2 red peaks at right…. That’s last month and now this month in Paris. Last month was an appetizer. This #heatwave is rewriting the history books.Via Guido Cioni for the amazing visual!
Headed for History! The size of the Pacific Heatwave, associated with EL Nino, is hard to comprehend. And it will only get more intense! Record or near record temperatures span 25% of the Pacific Ocean, or more than 4X the size of Europe or the Contiguous US… 1/
I will be in conversation today with @thebulletin.org and the great @michaelemann.bsky.social, 3:30 EDT, about new forms of #climate disinformation and how to understand the current outlook using the most recent data. Sign up here to tune in!👇pages.thebulletin.org/20260622-Cli….

This discussion puts its finger squarely on one of the two thorniest issues of geoengineering – namely that, to succeed, it would require multidecadal stable and rational governance of the countries and entities involved. How's that going, these days?
The second thorniest in my personal opinion is its impact on precipitation patterns and the risk of exacerbating the very geographic and socioeconomic inequities it's intended to diminish.
We act on what we pay attention to. If #climate gets 36 times less coverage than sport and entertainment, no wonder it stays low on the political agenda.#EndClimateSilence

Today’s News on Sustainable Energy, Traditional Polluting Energy from Fossil Fuel, and the Green Revolution:
Global power demand rose by 603 terawatt-hours y-o-y, an enormous increase driven by AI data centers, industrial growth, and rising electrification worldwide. But #Solarpower alone met nearly all of that new demand by itself with a meaningful boost from wind generation #ActOnClimate #Renewables

Change of plan! I'm moving up today's livestream to noon PT (instead of 6pm; I'll have future evening session to make up for it!). Topics remain the same: Potential for widespread fire weather setup in late June across West, plus a federal science update.
You know how we avoid buying a lot of produce and products from America because of the pesticide use? Mark Carney just rolled back our regulations in line with them, which will cause cancer rates to soar. He is aligning all our laws with theirs. #cdnpoli #climate #health

Happy Midwinter to all Antarctic folks. A year ago today, I was at Elephant Island, where Shackleton and his men were marooned for months before the amazing journey to South Georgia and ultimate rescue.Elephant Island is just outside the Antarctic Circle, so we did see a sunrise, albeit briefly.
