Extreme Temperature Diary-March 24, 2018/ Topic: Calling For A Green Youth March

Saturday March 24th… Dear Diary. The main purpose of this ongoing post will be to track United States extreme or record temperatures related to climate change. Any reports I see of ETs will be listed below the main topic of the day. I’ll refer to extreme or record temperatures as ETs (not extraterrestrials)😊. Here is today’s main climate change related topic:

Calling For A Green Youth March

Today I am inspired by many youth marching and speaking in response to the Parkland shooting and against gun violence in general. The historic March For Our Lives event has directed  hundreds of thousands to take to the streets for a just cause. I’m very optimistic about the future looking at bright young people voicing their requests and demands all across America. The gun problem is a made in America problem. So too is the carbon pollution problem to the extent that our current leaders have not signed off on the Paris Accords and continue to get campaign contributions from special interest fossil future companies.

The future is now. Today, Saturday 3/24/18 is the day that Millennials and post Millennials took charge taking the reigns from Baby Boomers and Generation X. Millennials and what is termed generation Z, those born after the turn of the century during 2018 are starting to shape the moral character of my nation and will definitely shape policy moving into the 2020s. Being a Boomer today I’m going to ask younger people to take responsibility for a future environment that they will live in long after my spirit has departed this planet. Also, to Millennials, I apologize. I apologize for not doing or saying enough on the climate issue when I could during the 1990s outside of my comfy meteorological work environment. Youth is fleeting, so I ask Millennials not to make the same mistake.

What I am calling for is another youth march. In 2017 we did have the March for Science and in the past many environmental protests to shine a light on the climate crisis, but those didn’t focus youth energy. This time I propose a youth march against “brown energy” and for the U.S. to get on board the Paris Accords. Organizations like Bill McKinnon’s 350.org, Greenpeace, and Al Gore’s Climate Reality Project could sponsor a youth event. I’ll leave it to any wanting to march to come up with a name for their event with an emphasis on the word their, because as of today Millennials own this planet.

As of 2018 in the United States gun violence is a more pressing  problem than climate change, however unchecked global warming has the potential to harm and displace Millennials and subsequent generations much more than automatic weapons. The youth of this land are smart enough to get this. They won’t let mass environmental tragedy unfold like school shootings. I’m sure that Millennials want to keep coastal cities where many of them reside in tact. Today youth are shaping their future in association with guns through nearly countless voices. I want to hear meaningful, galvanizing shouting against climate change.

Dear Diary. Today, 3/26 I saw that indeed a youth climate march has been planned. Great news!

From the Grist article: “Margolin started planning the upcoming climate march, which she calls “Zero Hour,” last August, after the Trump administration announced its plans to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement. She recruited Mrinalini Chakraborty, head of strategy for the national Women’s March, to help the students file for permits and plan logistics. Now, the organizing committee includes dozens of youth from Connecticut to California. The official website for the march launched last week.”
