Extreme Temperature Diary- Tuesday April 14th, 2020/ Main Topic: A Disturbing Gulf of Mexico Heat Wave

Tuesday April 14th… Dear Diary. The main purpose of this ongoing blog will be to track United States extreme or record temperatures related to climate change. Any reports I see of ETs will be listed below the main topic of the day. I’ll refer to extreme or record temperatures as ETs (not extraterrestrials).😉

Main Topic: A Disturbing Gulf of Mexico Heat Wave

Dear Diary. Today’s main subject will be short and serve as a big warning. The United States just came off its sixth warmest winter on record. One consequence of this warmth was that cold air masses had a lot of trouble penetrating as far south as the Gulf of Mexico, so an already warm Gulf did not cool off much during the winter months. I’ve seen one big note on this:

Here is another view of bathwater conditions already in the Gulf of Mexico as of mid April. Sea surface temperatures are up to 3-4°C above average:

Around the Gulf of Mexico we are seeing some very eye opening records or “ET’s:

Hurricane forecasters foresee very little shear across the Atlantic Basin this year since we won’t have an El Nino, predicting a very active season. When we add extreme gulf heat to the mix we likely will see trouble in the form of major hurricanes as a threat throughout coastal areas of the southern U.S. Now add that a pandemic will likely be taking place during the summer into fall, and you have the perfect cheesy disaster movie script, although I’m not making this up. It’s real life. We will all see what threats transpire across the Gulf of Mexico during 2020 very soon.

Now here are some of today’s articles and notes on the horrid COVID-19 pandemic:

Here is more climate and weather news from Tuesday:

(As usual, this will be a fluid post in which more information gets added during the day as it crosses my radar, crediting all who have put it on-line. Items will be archived on this site for posterity. In most instances click on the pictures of each tweet to see each article.)
