The main purpose of this ongoing blog will be to track planetary extreme, or record temperatures related to climate change. Any reports I see of ETs will be listed below the main topic of the day. I’ll refer to extreme or record temperatures as ETs (not extraterrestrials).😜

Dear Diary. Heatwave Delphi, the latest system that I have dubbed for a fossil fuel company, has been with us since August 9th:
This is exceptionally long for one identifiable heatwave and associated heat dome to affect the United States. Indeed, a heatwave like Delphi is what we would expect in a world warming due to carbon pollution.
As of today, Delphi is a shadow of its former self since it ended in the Southwest yesterday but is still identifiable on 500 millibar charts:
On the above Pivotal Weather chart, we can still identify the center of Heatwave Delphi over El Paso Texas at about 592 millibars. Just like with tropical systems, as long as we can identify the system, the system will continue to be named. However, National Weather Service advisories need to be present for a heatwave to not be declared dead. Heatwave Delphi is down to a CAT 1 using my system with some associated heat advisories located in the south-central U.S. for today:
These advisories have been expanding, and Delphi will be back to a CAT2 once sine heat warnings are issued. What’s amazing is that going into the second half of September that Dephi’s heat dome will grow monstrously strong as it moves eastward, even by mid-summer standards:
Thankfully, the heat dome will not become stuck in place at a record strong level and will be broken up by cool system retrograding westward from the Atlantic:
Nevertheless, Delphi will be strong enough to produce at least a couple of thousands of reports of daily and monthly hot records by my estimate going through the end of next week. For example, forecast temperature values for this coming Tuesdat will be above record values for many locations across the southern tier of states:
