The main purpose of this ongoing blog will be to track planetary extreme, or record temperatures related to climate change. Any reports I see of ETs will be listed below the main topic of the day. I’ll refer to extreme or record temperatures as ETs (not extraterrestrials).😉
Main Topic: South America Stuck Under an Unending Heatwave
Dear Diary. The continents of South America and Africa more than any others are not catching many if any breaks this year from relentless heat brought to those areas of the world by anthropogenic climate change. Today we will concentrate on South America.
South America is under a sprawling heat dome today with a center over southern Brazil that is around 592 decameters. At least southern Chile and Argentina are starting to see typical fall fronts cooling those countries:
Do we see much of a change in one week? Hardly:
Closed to the surface today, we can see anomalous heat at the two-meter temp level:
How does all of this translate into surface records? Maximiliano Herrera has described the situation as bonkers. Here are few reports from him the last couple of days:
Under these conditions the Amazon rainforest will have a hard time surviving the next couple of decades I fear, which is an extremely frightening prospect. At least with the advent of La Niña later this year, South America should be getting some heat relief from cooler and wetter weather regimes.
As usual, I’ll keep reporting records from Max each day. Here are more that he has reported since yesterday, March 15th:
Here are more “ET’s” recorded from around the planet the last couple of days, their consequences, and some extreme temperature outlooks, as well as any extreme precipitation reports:
Here is more brand-new February 2024 climatology:
Here is More Climate News from Saturday:
(As usual, this will be a fluid post in which more information gets added during the day as it crosses my radar, crediting all who have put it on-line. Items will be archived on this site for posterity. In most instances click on the pictures of each tweet to see each article. The most noteworthy items will be listed first.)
