Extreme Temperature Diary-February 18th, 2019/ Heat Wave Targets Europe In Winter

Heat Wave Targets Europe In Winter

Monday February 18th… Dear Diary. The main purpose of this ongoing post will be to track United States extreme or record temperatures related to climate change. Any reports I see of ETs will be listed below the main topic of the day. I’ll refer to extreme or record temperatures as ETs (not extraterrestrials.😉

Upon perusing some met models earlier today I was absolutely flabbergasted to see as strong as an upper ridge forecast to remain and build over Europe today. I mean this thing is literally off this Pivotal Weather chart by this coming weekend:

A 585-588 decameter ridge centered over the Benelux countries is hot for July let alone late February.

This ridge was already in place over this prior weekend where numerous reports of record warmth were surfacing from Etienne Kapikian of France. The ridge was warm but much weaker than is forecast by Friday and Saturday:

Here are some reports from Europe that occurred the last couple of days:

Records were being set from western Europe into the Baltic Sea region:

On a bright note (pun intended) this past weekend’s ridge produced clear skies where normally much cloudiness occurs in February. Still, to me this satellite image is quite ominous for climate and weather watchers like yours truly:

I did put Europe and the rest of the world in perspective in a tweet from this morning:

We will see how this winter “heat wave” evolves though this coming weekend. Doubtless many Europeans will enjoy a big break from winter chill, but will many be in summer shorts? Stay tuned.

Here is some more weather and climate news from Monday:

(This will be big news here in the States.)

(As usual, this will be a fluid post in which more information gets added during the day as it crosses my radar, crediting all who have put it on-line. Items will be archived on this site for posterity.)
