The main purpose of this ongoing blog will be to track planetary extreme or record temperatures related to climate change. Any reports I see of ETs will be listed below the main topic of the day. I’ll refer to extreme or record temperatures as ETs (not extraterrestrials).😉
Main Topic: Severe Flooding Possible For Portions Of The Midwest
Dear Diary. Over the last two days just about everyone in the meteorological and climatological field has been ooing and ahing over the extreme ridge and Rex Block pattern that will be responsible for near all-time record heat in the Pacific Northwest over the coming weekend and perhaps beyond:
One other aspect of this very unusual climate change related pattern depicted on the above chart, that might prove more destructive than the heat itself, would be the juicy stalled front caused by the cold trough caught between the mega Pacific Northwest ridge, and the weaker, more typical for late June, heat dome located over the Southeast. This jet weather pattern will cause a front to stall, stretching from the Great Lakes southwestward through the southern Plains, and that spells trouble. We could be looking squarely in the eye of another climate change related heavy rainfall event.
Here are some charts from the Weather Prediction Center:
Rainfall amounts look impressive but not too overwhelming (above 12″) such that high risk flooding outlooks have not been issued:
There will also be associated severe storms to contend with near the front:
We will watch the Midwest system, which we hope won’t drown a community or two from now through the weekend while, of course, keeping an eagle eye on the building Northwest heat:

(As usual, this will be a fluid post in which more information gets added during the day as it crosses my radar, crediting all who have put it on-line. Items will be archived on this site for posterity. In most instances click on the pictures of each tweet to see each article. The most noteworthy items will be listed first.)
Now here are some of today’s articles and notes on the horrid COVID-19 pandemic:
