A severe heatwave is affecting four Arab countries, with temperatures reaching 50 degrees Celsius.

Arab Weather – The latest outputs of weather models indicate that the impact of the heat dome will increase during the coming days, with its impact reaching its peak towards the end of the week, imposing extremely hot weather conditions on large parts of North Africa and the western Mediterranean.

The heat dome intensifies, pushing an extremely hot air mass towards the region.

The heat dome is expected to gradually intensify and strengthen over the coming days, leading to a surge of extremely hot and dry desert air towards the Maghreb countries. Temperatures are expected to reach record levels in many inland areas, potentially approaching or exceeding 50 degrees Celsius locally, particularly in:

* The western and interior parts of Algeria.
* Large areas of Tunisia.
Northwest Libya.
* The interior regions of Morocco.

Meanwhile, extremely hot weather extends to large parts of the western Mediterranean, with a noticeable rise in temperatures compared to their usual averages for this time of year.

An exceptional heat wave increases the risk of fires.

This heat wave comes amid severe drought affecting large parts of the region, which increases the likelihood of forest and woodland fires breaking out and spreading, especially with low humidity and strong local winds at certain times.

Some areas have already begun recording large fires in the vegetation cover, amid expectations that the intense heat during the coming days will increase the pressure on firefighting teams and raise the risk of the fires spreading.

Recommendations as the heat wave intensifies

It is advised to avoid direct exposure to sunlight during midday and afternoon hours, to drink plenty of fluids, and not to leave children or the elderly inside closed vehicles, in addition to exercising extreme caution when in forested or agricultural areas, due to the high risk of fires breaking out as the heat dome continues to intensify.

And God knows best.

Growing signs of prolonged & potentially intense heatwave across SW by early Aug. A broad Four Corners ridge will strengthen far beyond usual levels on its western flank, possibly due in part to indirect effects from a yet-to-develop East Pacific hurricane. Details TBD. #CAwx

Worth the listen! As a family doc, thanks for discussing the health effects -not just the heat or the daily weather events, but the everyday poisoning of air & water that hurts people and health daily. Thank you Dr. Professor @michaelemann.bsky.social for all you do for climate and environment!

2026 is on track to be the warmest (~35% chance) or second warmest (~63%) year on record, while 2027 is very likely (92% chance) to be the warmest on record on the back of a growing super El Niño event. For more, check out my new Carbon Brief State of the Climate Q2 update: www.carbonbrief.org/…

This report argues that people don’t need to be convinced that climate chaos and wider societal breakdown pose a serious threat. They need to be convinced they can do something about it. assets.climatemajorityproject.com/Mobilising%2…

Yes, in fact I've argued that such metrics may be overly conservative because they don't entirely account for dynamical factors. See my commentary on the recent @nationalacademies.org report on extreme weather attribution: michaelmann.net/comments-on-…

Unfortunately, and as anticipated, yesterday's widespread lightning-following-heat event amid severe drought has sparked a large number of additional wildfires, expanding existing outbreak across OR, WA, & BC. Numerous heat signatures & large smoke plumes are evident. #ORwx #WAwx
